James brings a great deal of design and marketing experience. He has worked with design agencies and new media companies in the UK, in addition he ran a web and interactive design consultancy on the South coast of England, before a move into the academic world.
Before setting up James Barnett & Associates, James Co-ordinated the Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design programme at the University of Waikato. He managed the three year course and lectured on two of the final year papers, 'Degree Project' and 'Internship Programme'. A professional approach toward design, was a regular teaching theme and remains at the core of James's academic interests.
Before focusing on design, James spent five years as a marketing manager in the housing industry, where he was responsible for employing design teams to create a range of promotional material. This experience gives James Barnett & Associates an excellent perspective on the role of design within the commercial world:-
"graphic design is not simply 'eye candy', it should communicate with a target audience. From a business perspective, design must deliver real, measurable benefits. It should work hard, as a key component within a marketing strategy."
James has now closed JB&A to all commercial work and is focussing his attention on working to promote awareness of sustainable land management issues in New Zealand with NZ Landcare Trust. The Trust believes in 'sustainable land management through community involvement' - a proactive approach that encourages communities to work together and improve their local landscapes a waterways.
